It would be great if Fuji would cook up some black and white film for the Instax cameras. The camera is powered by a pair of AA batteries (included in the box too!), which serve to drive the motor for ejecting prints and charging the flash. I thought the film prices were too high and somewhat rolled my eyes at the resurgence of Instax cameras when they reemerged in the US back in 2010. What interested me was not the cameras featured in the video but the very useful comparison of Fuji Instax vs Polaroid film That’s great, but it would have been far more useful to transfer any photo to the app, regardless of whether or not it was printed on the camera. Other options, like Fujifilm’s Instax Square line or the Polaroid Insta, print square images, making the orientation irrelevant. The color does make it veer closer to the toy-style look of many instant cameras, though, if that’s something to avoid. There aren’t a lot of instant cameras that use wide film, so the Instax Wide 400 finds itself competing with the likes of the Lomo’Instant Wide ($169). When it comes to digital image quality, even budget modern phones outclass it, although that is kind of the point, as for snapping and printing Instax Mini prints, it is perfect. In terms of digital image quality, even the most budget of phones surpass it, but for snapping and printing Instax Mini prints, it absolutely excels. But regardless of my personal tastes, the Instax 41 is the new top choice for instant photography enthusiasts who prefer a sophisticated camera without the playful, youthful vibe embodied by the Instax Mini 12. Instead, Fujifilm has opted for a big new redesign with a more modern look that brings the design of the Mini 41 in line with the Instax Evo range (and has notes of Fujifilm's uber-popular rangefinder cameras). On some especially sunny testing days, the camera did struggle to perfectly nail exposure, with some images being a little overexposed. But Instax film is not about technical excellence, the charm is the unique look and fun of instant photography. To match other recent Instax cameras, there is an updated twisting lens to start up the camera and put it into close-focus mode. It's worth mentioning that one of the new features on the camera is designed to eliminate these problems for you. —allows you to click on the image to tilt/pan/rotate/zoom, and the plug-in can even automatically add keyframes as you go. The only way you can pan around is by adding your clips to a timeline, applying the Insta360 plug-in, and then going into the Effects Controls window and using sliders to look around. Polaroid prints tend to have a dreamier look, which can be just as appealing, depending on your preferences. The main difference is in the shape of the film they use. This works with bigger film sizes, which is better for showing more detail. I was disappointed by the specs here, as you get a 4.9MP camera with a 1/5-inch CMOS sensor, and images are in JPG format only. But if you want a hybrid instant camera that feels more grown-up, the Sofort 2 is sure to appeal. After testing and using many instant cameras over the years, the Leica Sofort 2 is the one I've enjoyed the most. This is first-generation instant film tech (which isn't exactly renowned for its perfect exposures 25 years later) in a camera body that has a quarter of a century of wear-and-tear – and it still took pictures that I'm happy with! The camera has a mostly metal body, with only the door and front body covering in plastic. Advertisements from 1966 suggest the 500 is both an Instamatic and a Retina camera. As an alternative, I decided to order the Fakmatic, a 3D printed Instamatic cassette and spool that is designed to be taken apart. As for selfies, these were again very tricky to master using the selfie mirror and close-up lens attachment. However, I found that using this camera for self-portraits and with close-up subjects is where its performance faltered. Yet, despite the green finish, the Instax Wide 400 could also pass as a kid's camera from a distance. This worked quite well when I tested it, and it's a clever method that saves you from having to look for handy objects on which to prop the camera. Despite being oversized (a necessary consequence of incorporating an Instax Wide format printer into its body), the Instax Wide Evo is stylish, with a dark two-tone finish, old-school control dials, and an engraved metal facade. In terms of other less obvious features, we’re provided with a tripod socket here but it’s on the side flank of the camera rather than the base as one might traditionally expect. This juts out a little bit proud of the body but it’s still worth paying attention to, in order that a stray finger doesn’t partly obscure it when gripping the camera in both hands. The Instax Mini 40 has a similar vintage appearance, but does without any digital functions for true point-and-shoot ability. I reviewed that camera last year, and couldn't fault the incredibly simple operation. In fact, upon seeing it for the first time, I remarked how similar it was to the Fujifilm Instax SQ40. Fortunately, that didn't take long as the Instax Wide 400 is an impressively simple camera. Instax Mini film is imperfect with lots of contrast and some questionable sharpness, but image quality comes second to the real charm of this camera with its fun-filled minute-and-a-half wait for instant photo gratification. Of course, the Mini Evo is not an analogue camera, but a digital camera that can also act as a printer, and because of this, moving from also using analogue Instax cameras has saved me a fortune in buying film. The Fujifilm Instax mini Evo, one of the best instant cameras I've reviewed. The Evo models are digital cameras that you can then choose to print images from, if and when the desire strikes you. And the mini 12™ is perfect for those golden hour moments when the light hits your tent just right, or when your mates are gathered round sharing stories over toasted marshmallows. Grab an ice cream with sprinkles and a flake, get comfy on a retro deckchair, and use the mini 12™’s selfie mirror to take the ultimate vintage-style seaside selfie. Use the close-up mode on the camera for flawless accessory pics. In the case of the 8 and 9, the camera will automatically suggests the best brightness setting by reading the ambient light conditions. That said, the Mini 7s can take approximately 200 shots (20 packs) before the batteries have to be replaced, whereas the Mini 8/9 can only manage half that (10 packs). One difference is the number of AA batteries required to power the camera. In a way, the question makes perfect sense since many of their specifications, from the 60mm lens and aperture range to the basic brightness settings and the design, are almost identical. Instax Square is, as the name suggests, a square format film that, at 8.6x7.2cm (3.4x2.8in), is roughly a third larger than an Instax Mini photo. The Fujifilm Instax Mini 40 is essentially the same camera, but in a nicer body for only slightly more money. It has an auto exposure system that helps combat the overly sensitive nature of instant film when shooting outdoors. Shots do tend to have a bit of a vintage vibe, but much less so than rival cameras, and any visible vignetting is only slight. Get the exposure correct and your photos will have vibrant colours and plenty of detail. Fuji is generous with its bundle, including a ten-pack of film and two AA batteries in the box, along with the close-up lens attachment which clips in place on the end of the lens barrel. It’s something you’ll quickly adapt to after your first few photos, but something to keep in mind. But don’t worry as 5 Megapixels is still more detail than an instax Wide printer needs, and also maximises the limited storage. Once you’ve found a photo you’d like to print in playback, open-out the crank lever on the side and wind it round a couple of times until the screen graphics show the image being pushed upwards. As mentioned earlier the Wide Evo sports the widest lens in the instax series to date, equivalent to an ultra-wide 16mm in 35mm or full-frame systems. But while the earlier Wide 400 was a fully analogue camera, the Wide Evo is a digital hybrid that’s essentially a larger version of the mini Evo launched three years earlier. Some are widely available whereas others have been discontinued, making them harder to find. The Mini 8 and 9 come in a wide array of colours – so many, in fact, that it is almost impossible to list them all. You won’t notice the difference when you’re out and about using the camera however. Good image quality Trifocal lenses assist with distance, mid-range and near viewing, but have even more distracting lines and image jumps that get in the way of good vision and good looks. Bifocal lenses assist with distance vision in the top and up-close vision in the bottom of the lens, but have a visible line that is distracting from both sides – wearers also experience an “image jump” when moving between viewing distances. Designed to pulse different colors, depending on what the printer is doing, this Smartphone printer is one smart cookie. Even the top most prominent button on the camera (the placement of which is normally reserved for a shutter button) is for adding different film styles to your images. As you would expect, because it takes wide-format instant prints, it's on the larger side. (Another alternative if you're set on a wide-format is 2024's Lomo’Instant Wide Glass – an attractive instant camera that we gave 4.5 stars in our in-depth review.) Indeed, I don't think many would be opposed to slinging the Wide Evo over their shoulder for the day. My favorite, though, is the crank that lets you manually print a picture by winding it, which is a nice design nod to the crank for winding back film on the best film cameras. A quality joint product may help repair existing tissue damage and also promote stronger joints, less susceptible to future degeneration. Therefore, it’s good to research them, compare them with this product, and then go for the one that suits you best. You’ll want to acquire a microSD memory card in order to use the camera fully, though. This is basically a way to ensure the functionality of the camera if it is given as a gift so that eager users can immediately test it out. You can remove this when you want to use a tripod, but otherwise it will likely live on the camera most of the time. There is a much-needed grip that attaches to the bottom of the camera to allow an average hand a full grip on the camera. He also writes on a number of specialist subjects including binoculars and monoculars, spotting scopes, microscopes, trail cameras, action cameras, body cameras, filters and cameras straps. Yes, you can do that here, but you can also use it like a regular digital camera – and as an extension of your smartphone. I did, however, admire the fact that the on-screen image becomes animated, and starts "ejecting" off the screen as the print starts emerging. If you don’t have the image on screen, then flipping the lever – as if to wind forward a roll of film in the old days – will achieve nothing. The Instax Mini Evo's digital photos are only on par with a basic smartphone's, but you'd be hard-pressed to tell once you press print. Hybrid instant models blend digital photography and instant film in a single device, making them an ideal starting point for anyone who's unfamiliar with the medium. The digital-first approach and lack of optical viewfinder might put off fans of true analogue photography, and the low resolution means it won't replace even a basic digital camera. A retro-themed spin on instant photography that puts fun first, the Mini Evo is our favorite hybrid instant camera so far. Additionally, the Instax Mini 7’s retro design adds a unique touch to every photo. This allows me to have physical copies of my memories instantly, making them more tangible and special. The film packs from Fujifilm come in varying sizes – 10 exposures, 20 exposures and 60 exposures – depending on how much shooting you will be doing. shutter button That said, if you’re conscious about wasting film, you might be better off opting for a hybrid camera like the Mini Evo or an Instax printer, such as the Mini Link 2 or the Square Link (for larger shots). However, during this time, I had decent chance to get a feel for the camera; how it handles for regular photos and selfies, plus the various filter and film effects possible through the physical controls on the camera. In terms of the wide-angle prints themselves, the larger size makes them feel much more premium than the smaller rectangular formats that mimic your smartphone pictures and is much more akin to the classic square instant prints that were once more popular. Print quality is classic Instax which we all know and love, and printing on Instax Wide film means these are the largest and most detailed prints you can get. I find this just a really strange and unnecessary limitation, it really reduces the Wide Evo’s usefulness as a digital camera while also coming across as a shady ploy to make you buy more film, which at around 90c per print – isn’t cheap. About two full turns on an image will send it to the printer, there is a visual indication screen to follow along, and if you want to abort before it starts printing, you can spin the level the other way or just stop and put the camera down for a few seconds. That said, being able to play with focus at all is a step up from most Instax cameras, where focus is fixed, and the 1-foot close focus distance of the Mini 99 is nice for macro-style shots. Fujifilm's New Instax Mini 99 is an Instax camera for those who love manual controls and creative effects. Also avoid more expensive Instax Mini cameras. If you can get a Mini 11 for cheap, it’s also still a great camera. Fuji makes countless more expensive Instax Mini cameras, but this is the one to get. I conducted comparative testing between every camera on this list (as well as my honorable mentions), which you can see in the comparison photos section below. Without question, the best Polaroid (or the best instant camera, period) for professionals is the Polaroid I-2. For a few impactful group shots, however, the Instax Wide 400 is the one to go for if you want big prints for photo albums. As a bonus, it can print any image on your phone onto Instax Mini film. Every other Fuji camera I’ve used, including the Quicksnap, all have their viewfinder on the left side or center. One of the stranger aspects of the camera is the decision to place the viewfinder on the top right edge of the camera, the exact opposite side of nearly every other camera on the planet. This camera has no flash on/off (which is a pain), but strangely enough, it has multiple manual exposure options. It’s exactly 1/2 the size of traditional Instax film, and uses the exact same chemicals. If you’re in the market for an Instax camera, I recommend checking it out! Sensible alternativesSome instant cameras with digital screens or smartphone connectivity allow you to preview your shots before printing them out, to dramatically reduce wastage (and therefore the cost of dud snaps). Fujifilm's first wide-format hybrid Instax is a gorgeous piece of design, and impresses with its ability to take both instant and digital photos. We’re also seeing more and more hybrid instant cameras, which combine the retro appeal of instant photography with the convenience of smartphone connectivity. With a simple turn, you can add colour effects to your images, choosing between faded green, warm tone, light blue, soft magenta, sepia and light leak. Having owned Instax cameras for a decade now, I'm no stranger to their charm. Images eject out of the top of the camera and take about a minute and half to develop. It weighs just under a pound (15.1 ounces) with batteries and film loaded. The Mini 41 is indeed mini, measuring 4.8 by 4 inches and only 2.4 inches deep. And fear not, kids, there is still a selfie mirror on the side of the lens. The first is that Fujifilm has made parallax correction work in close-up mode (enabled by twisting the lens to close up). I still have the original SP-2 and SP-3 printers and use them all the time. Indeed, their early Instax cameras don’t operate in this way but, wait for it, they’re prone to failure through the use of cheap plastics in the lens assembly. These cameras need a viewfinder – it is vital for their use, but do Fujifilm give a damn? Let’s get to the point, for £79 this camera is appalling in terms of value for money and build quality. You can record pre-shutter sounds in groups of five via my app, and it'll remember a set of five ready to play at random whenever you hit the shutter button. Simply connect via Bluetooth to the free app. But the solid build, capable shooting, display, and settings already make the Sofort a step up from the standard instant. Connecting the Leica Fotos app with the Sofort 2 is also incredibly simple. That’s probably not surprising, but it’s important to further keep in mind that the filters will amplify this problem. At the very least, I would have preferred being able to choose what area of the image to focus on using the screen. The alternative is to keep printing while working and clearing out the memory in the meantime. Curiously, the Mini 8+ comes with a mirror on the lens just like the Mini 9, so it can be considered a middle ground between the 8 and 9 versions. Instax Mini 8 – No mirror Instax Mini 9 – Mirror on the lens Unlike the Instax Mini 8, the Instax Mini 9 comes with a small selfie mirror attached directly to the lens. In the case of the Instax Mini 8 and 9, however, they are so similar that you could easily be tricked into thinking they were the same camera. Power-saving features put the camera to sleep after inactivity, which is normal and a good thing, but it's a slight pain to wake it up afterward. The lever requires you to push straight down to focus and push a little more to take a photo. Instead of a standard two-stage button, Fujifilm opted for a lever-style shutter control. Overall, reviews of the X5 have shown it has superior video quality both in normal and low lighting conditions. On the contrary, the GoPro Max offers more than enough video resolution for social media applications if that is a key point for you. However, that won’t stop me from sharing that the X5 also has a 1/1.28″ camera sensor with an F2 aperture and a 6mm focal length, all in a camera that weighs 200 g. However, the company has yet to release an updated version of the camera, while Insta360 has released a handful of new variations to its design. What to look for when buying an instant camera In my personal opinion, the Leica Sofort 2 is the best-looking instant print camera that has ever been made. The Sofort 2 now has a built-in memory that is capable of storing up to 45 images or is compatible with MicroSD cards via a slot on the bottom for anyone who wants to get snap-happy. So is there space for another brand in the instant camera space, especially one that comes at quite a premium? If you intend to keep using your camera then you'll need to ensure that your film supply is stocked up too. You love the retro analogue vibeInstant analogue cameras aren't for everyone. They're not exactly a new feature for Fuji, the digital Mini Evo has its own set, and the analog Instax Mini 99 has LED lights inside its body to add color cast and light leak effects optically to film. Pictures look good in prints and viewed on a screen, but if you zoom in to see a magnified view, you'll notice that there's very little detail or definition. The app also lets you use your phone as a remote control for the camera, which is a good option for group shots where you don't want to keep running back and forth to set a self-timer and get back in the frame. You'll want to add a microSD card for sure, and you don't have to get a fancy one—even a basic 16GB card is enough to store thousands of photos. You'll need to rock the power switch from on to off and back to on again to get up and running, as opposed to most cameras that wake from sleep with a press of a button or turn of a dial. There are two major players in the 360 camera market, Insta360 and GoPro. In this case, the camera marks the launch of the Instax Up! You can also tell which setting you’re in by aligning the text on the lens with the indicator light directly above it. The first click indicates that the camera is powered on, while the second activates the Close-Up mode. This means your selfies should appear better aligned. I love how faithfully the Instax mini 12 reproduces colors. Since the Instax mini 12 houses just one physical button, it doesn’t feature a self-timer or a double exposure mode like the Polaroid Go Gen 2. Next to the film compartment is a handy screen which displays how many shots you have left. I felt comfortable holding the camera with one hand, thanks to its lightweight body. It’s designed to be held with your right hand cupping the right side, and your index finger falling on the shutter button next to the lens. The 0.3m minimum focus distance gives you a surprising amount of versatility with your subjects. As mentioned, the flash will always fire, even if you’re outside in blazing sunlight, which might be annoying if you’re trying to get an image of, say, a pet without startling it. Instax shooting comes with some quirks, never more so than in a camera as no-frills as this. There’s no grip or anything, but the camera handles well enough. The camera boasts a far more aesthetically pleasing look and shape, with the strange bulbous bits on the side of the previous model gone for a more boxy silhouette. It's a very simple idea, and as I have been guilty of stacking coins, Blu-tac, or various other things under my camera to get a slightly elevated angle, I could have used something like this. One clever little feature that might go a little under the radar is the new angle adjustment accessories on the camera strap, these are two different sizes of wedges that can prop the camera forward or backward for a different angle. All in all, when it comes to usability you will not find a hand held camera which is easier than the Instax Mini 9 to operate. The ambient light sensors help the camera to automatically suggest the exposure modes to be used, which I found to be pretty perfect. The battery and the photo cartridge installation is fairly simple. When it comes to design Fujifilm has knocked it out of the park. Overall, I really love the look and the feel of the camera. Normal Mode is meant for general photography that takes place between three and 10 feet, Landscape Mode is for photos where subjects are 10 feet away and beyond. It also has an Automatic Exposure function that Fujifilm says enables better print clarity compared to the Wide 300. The Instax Wide 400 features a self timer dial that gives photographers options for timing photos in two second increments up to 10 seconds. The camera is powered by two AA batteries (included in the box), and uses Instax Mini Film. Instax has changed the name from ‘selfie mode’ to ‘close up mode’, and you activate it by twisting the lens one notch further (rather than manually pulling it out). Instead you just twist the lens and away you go, making for a much cleaner design. This is great for younger users, but if you want something a bit more sophisticated, it’s worth looking at the Instax Mini 40. Instax film has a glossy finish and shows strong color fidelity, but like most positive films has a very narrow exposure latitude and dynamic range. It can leave advanced-level photographers wanting more, however. It has the same advantages and drawbacks as every fixed optical finder—it's always bright and in focus, but framing isn't precise since you don't get a through-the-lens view. We've not yet reviewed the SL645, which also uses Mini film, but previously tested the Instax Square edition, the Nons SL660 ($599). The printer typically runs about $100 / £100 / AU$169, which makes it not just one of my favorite retro gadgets in my bag but also one of the most affordable. That medium also means that the prints aren’t perfect, but that’s part of the charm. It uses the Instax Mini type instant film. I just send them to my phone, then send them to the Instax printer. It takes about two minutes to power on the rechargeable device, find a picture that best represents my day in my iPhone’s photo library, and print it out wirelessly. The Fujifilm Instax mini 99 uses Instax mini film packs, which generally cost about $14 per double film pack (20 pieces of film) — so you’re paying about 70 cents per picture. Soft magenta often produced images that felt overexposed, even when adjusting exposure compensation. The six LED color effects found in the Instax mini 99 will feel familiar if you ever used the Instax Evo mini Hybrid camera, thankfully in the mini 99 they are much easier to access. Going like for like with a 20 shot pack of Zink paper or Instax film, you are going to spend 65p every time you press the shutter on the Kodak and 75p per Instax Mini shot. Indeed, you would need pockets the size of a Sports Direct shopping bag to fit this in and “chunky” is apparently a synonym of “garbage.” One can only conclude that Fuji ditched the more complex lens design to not only avoid returns, but to save a chunk of cash in the process.
