According to GU Energy Labs, Roctane Gels have three times more electrolytes and BCAAs than their original gel to help delay fatigue and improve muscle contractility for long-duration exercise. For this review, I was able to use the shoes for my usual training, which included fundamental endurance runs, long runs, and even splits. Of course, these are preferences based on my footwear proclivities, but high-drop shoes throw off my motion path, and heavier shoes can feel like anchors during long runs. Thankfully, D3 track eventually gave me the room to experiment, learn, and understand what shoes belong in a running rotation. This was two hours after the full marathon, so it meant that the runners participating in Sunday’s two categories would finish roughly around the same time. The Glycerin GTS 21 does not feature a heel tab, consistent with most other Brooks running shoes. One version is made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) formed through a supercritical process, which leaves small gas bubbles suspended evenly inside the foam. In 2024, Mizuno introduced a new ultralight EVA foam, Enerzy NXT, in the fantastically bouncy Neo Vista trainer. Mizuno claims that Enerzy offers 15 percent more energy return than the company’s last generation of EVA foam, U4ic. It's clear for us that Saucony wants to align this model with comfort, typically signifying a plush upper that snugly embraces your foot. If you're looking for a cushioned-yet-versatile shoe, the Triumph still works well despite packing more foam than ever before, as it scored an average 16.1N in our 30-degree bend test. We believe that a single measurement doesn't fully capture the shoe's feel, which is why we always take another one in the big toe area. The last few weeks were some of the fastest averages I’ve maintained in about a year, and it was clearly because of the shoes.” The shoe is lightweight and has a lateral heel cutout with domes to promote propulsion and shave off even more weight. It’s the bounciest Brooks racing shoe I’ve ever raced in. The newly released Hyperion Elite 5 is a follow-up to the Hyperion Elite 4 PB, a second edition of the shoe introducing Brooks’s new super foam, DNA Gold. Cushioned to the max (45mm in the heel and 37mm in the forefoot), the Superblast 2 retains many of the cherished features that made the first iteration so popular, with a couple of key updates. So, if your aim is simply to get round 26.2 miles, without blisters and without your heart jumping out of your chest, these are a great bet. It's noticeably softer underfoot than the previous version, however, that doesn’t mean that you’re sacrificing responsiveness here. If you’re new to running, it’s a good idea to visit a running shop to get a gait analysis. To reduce the colossal footprint of the global trainer industry, we support the idea of running every possible mile in the shoes you already own, revelling in every last run you can share. Some midsole foam energy and the mild rocker make the ride pleasantly sprightly when transitioning from heel to toe, but it doesn’t have the responsiveness you’ll probably want for tackling faster sessions. New Balance is a fantastic brand for moderately cushioned shoes that deliver responsiveness and stability. This is why we would recommend them to more experienced runners or to those looking for a better ground feel during their workouts. The Mach 5 is a little lighter than the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 thanks to its smaller stack height, making it feel more responsive and dynamic when running. Like most Brooks shoes, you can expect to get close to 500 miles from the pair. My first run with the Glycerin 21 felt a bit firm, but the shoe started to soften up after logging more miles. Back in 2021, the highly underrated Brooks Aurora-BL was the first shoe to get the DNA LOFT v3 midsole foam. For the first time I was doubting whether I’d actually finish without walking. It was the kind of pain where I would have said to myself “Enough for today” because I would’ve guessed an injury wasn’t far away. They seemed to come rather quickly at the start, but by Kilometre 25 it felt like decades between them. (The sculpted sole is also a sneaky way of keeping the heel stack under the 40mm World Athletics limit for international competition.) The sole features pronounced toe spring and a massive heel bevel that encourages midfoot landings and lightning-fast transitions to toe-off. Up top, a jacquard mesh upper with plenty of padding around the ankle and on the tongue creates a snug, comfortable fit around the foot. Positioned at the 3 o’clock mark and protected by flared steel crown guards, it’s deeply knurled for a secure grip, ensuring ease of operation even when wearing gloves. It’s adorned with bold, black Arabic numerals marking the hours, accompanied by a smaller 24-hour scale on the inner ring, allowing for easy military time reading. Its dial features a crisp white background that enhances legibility and contrast, making it ideal for tactical and everyday use. Geometry and weight are similar to the v4 but a new engineered mesh upper is lighter, more breathable and more comfortable, locking nicely around the midfoot for a secure, non-restrictive fit. Underneath is a layer of firmer SR-02 EVA foam for stability and support, with a full-length carbon-fibre FlyPlate sandwiched between. This hugely updated carbon-plated trainer serves up a snug, performance-focused fit, with a peppy, versatile ride that’s smooth and consistent for speed, tempo and longer runs. The leader of the supershoe pack has lagged behind on super trainers. It is also not the most responsive shoe, which makes it more appropriate for less experienced runners. While Nike has come up with some of the most expensive and high-tech shoes on the market, they’re also offering a more budget-friendly daily trainer in the shape of the newly released Air Zoom Pegasus 39. Although the outsole is grippy for technical trails, it presents the usual drawback for Salomon shoes – their proprietary technology doesn’t quite cut it on wet rocks. Runners also report excellent comfort levels from the upper and a slightly livelier bounce from the Fresh Foam X midsole. While not a particularly innovative shoe, this iteration of New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 offers a smooth ride, a sturdy design that will last for many miles, and good protection from the elements. At $230, its speed and agility can match or even exceed other more expensive racers we’ve tested in the lab, making it our best-value marathon running shoe. Undeniable on foot and proven in the lab, it’s our marathon running shoe with the best traction. During our test runs, Saucony Endorphin Pro 4 delivers a forgiving yet stable and responsive ride—making it our ultimate marathon shoe for heel-strikers.
