During each run of the bulls, the owner’s dog, Kiwi, would run alongside, so I turned the camera onto him and again it snapped-on quickly and confidently. The camera easily snapped onto the closest subject within the nine-area zone and stuck with it as it approached at fair speed. My first Continuous AF test was shooting a small herd of bulls charging towards me, peering from behind the safety of a gate. Where the original EM1 struggled to continuously autofocus with any degree of confidence in my tests, the Mark II consistently felt quicker and much more confident. Moving onto manual focusing, the Leica has a very smooth manual focusing ring and a handy switch on the side of the barrel to switch between AF and MF, so you don’t need to go through any menus on the camera. The Olympus 17mm lens barrel protrudes by a mm or so below the GM1’s lens mount and body base. Both have seven-blade aperture systems, and again I’ll be taking a closer look at how they render out-of-focus elements in my results pages. The Leica 15mm is designed for Micro Four Thirds bodies which apply a two-times field-reduction factor – that means they deliver coverage that’s equivalent to a full-frame lens that’s two times longer. Driving the AF system are Single AF or Continuous AF options, the latter available with optional tracking if desired. My first impression of this stuff is that it’s heavy duty. I think you can get some replacement 1.35v batteries but they’re hard to find or expensive. In those circumstances it’s been very difficult to concentrate on the somewhat involving activity of photography, film photography being especially involving. Our Review of the Company The OMD EM1 Mark II is equipped with a new 20 Megapixel Live MOS sensor that’s stabilized within the body. I first tried this with the Leica 25mm f1.4, but found the combination was both hesitant and lacked confidence, with the camera frequently settling without focusing on anything. This employs electronic stabilisation in addition to sensor-shift stabilisation for even fewer visible wobbles, albeit with some reduction in the field of view. I had continuous AF enabled here so the camera would refocus from near to distant subjects; as you’ll see it does this successfully if a little hesitantly. So the RAW buffer is small, but it empties in a second or two and you can start shooting again – albeit for only a shot four-frame burst at 5fps if you’re shooting RAW. To test it I fitted the XZ-2 with a freshly formatted Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-1 card rated at 95MB/s, put it in Shutter priority mode and set the image quality to Large Fine JPEGs. The Stylus XZ-2 has two continuous shooting modes, Sequential shooting at 5fps and Hi-Speed at 15fps, but at a greatly reduced HD video resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. In low light, though, it isn’t so straightforward and you’re left wishing for something akin to the focus peaking of Sony’s NEX models. As well As S-AF and C-AF modes there’s a C-AF TR tracking mode which locks onto a subject and follows it around the frame. As you can see, the 5-axis sensor-shift stabilisation built into the PEN E-P5 is more effective than the Mega O.I.S. stabilisation of the Panasonic 14-42mm kit lens. With a stabilised lens fitted the PEN E-P5 gives you the option to use either the camera’s built-in stabilisation or the lens stabilisation. To test the PEN E-P5’s stabilisation I zoomed the lens to its furthest 42mm (84mm equivalent) position and took a series of shots in Shutter priority mode, first with the stabilisation turned off and then with it set to the 5-axis Mode 1 setting. But Olympus has stuck with this LCD panel as it reckons it’s the best option for delivering 120fps with progressive scan for maintaining detail on moving subjects with continuous AF, when rival technologies often reduce their detail. Like the OMDs before it, the EM1 Mark II focuses quickly and confidently in Single AF modes, snapping into focus with the minimum of fuss and delay. If I wanted faster frame rates, I’d accept the loss of Continuous AF and select one of the Sequential High modes, either the plain square for up to 15fps with the mechanical shutter or with the heart icon for up to 60fps with the electronic shutter. If I wanted Continuous AF, I’d go for one of the Sequential Low modes, choosing the plain square if I wanted the 10fps mechanical shutter, or the square with the heart if I wanted the maximum 18fps electronic shutter. And when you do, you discover a playful, charming, charismatic camera that's imbued with creativity. The OM System OM-3 rekindles the kind of magic not seen since the Olympus glory days. The full-frame Zf is unsurprisingly the camera to beat here, with its larger individual pixels being less susceptible to generating noise. This test compares the amount of random noise generated by the camera at different ISO settings as a proportion of the actual image information (the 'signal'). Like the E-M5 and E-PL5, the EP-5 provides automatic exposure bracketing up to 5 frames in 1/3, 2/3 and 1EV increments and a seven frame option at 1/3 and 2/3EV. The new features aren’t limited to fun, there’s plenty to appeal to the serious photographer too. The layout is displayed on screen as you shoot with the Live view displayed in the current frame so you can see exactly what you’ll get and if you don’t like it you can delete your shot and try again. There are two frame sets available, Standard and Fun, (though the distinction is pretty arbitrary) with a total of seven layout variations between them. More slight softening occurs at f11 but these changes are very minor and it’s not until you hit f16 and f22 there the really noticeable changes in image quality occur. At this 200mm equivalent focal length the best results are achieved at f5.6, there’s a very slight softening of the detail at f8. The contrast improves when you stop down to f4 but beyond that there’s not much change, detail is also a little sharper as you stop down. Here’s the thing, if you name a product “Kings Blood” slacking on it’s formulation really isn’t a option. Kings Blood is a new supplement that is being prepared to be released by Olympus Labs. – and the only other lens around that would fit onto the LTL 3 is none other than a Hanimex 28mm f2.8 – allegedly “the worst lens of all time”, so I have seen! It just so happens that, after discovering that what I took to be the ‘kit lens’, the Tessar 50mm f2.8, had a broken diaphragm, earlier today I attempted a repair – to no avail, as I should have expected! Not a klak Klak like the Konica Minolta, nor a vibrating slap snap as on the Nikon D200 – it’s beautifully damped, soft and elegant (if a shutter sound can be described as elegant) very much unlike any other shutter sound and feel. I’ve had a lot of cameras over the years, but it’s very rarely that one comes along which I am immediately enamoured by. CCD cameras of the 2000’s sensors I guess were made and their colour array’s designed to give customers something akin to Film – hence I think the “CCD look” is compared to Film and claimed to be ‘Filmic’. It can be hard to specify exactly what you’d like to focus on and even when you’re tapping it, the camera doesn’t always respond the way you’d want it to; and once it does settle, there’s a little focus breathing back and forth. Thinking it might be a restriction with this older lens (that’s also a non-Olympus model), I switched to the Olympus 17mm f1.8 which claims movie and stills focusing capabilities. I was using Movie IS mode 2 in this clip which employs sensor-shift stabilisation alone for uncropped coverage; I have a version with Movie IS Mode 1 below. Very nice and compact lens. Even if it’s only one stop, that’s quite a significant difference, especially when combined with the TOUGH TG-5’s two stop aperture advantage. I’d say the difference in noise levels between the two models is between one and two stops. That said, you can still tell that it’s quarter past twelve, just about. 12800 is a bit of a stretch though and I suspect is there more for marketing reasons than anything. Note the OM-D E-M5 has a seperate compartment on its side for the memory card, so it won’t get blocked when mounted on a tripod. It takes the same BLN-1 battery as the OM-D E-M5 (but not the other PEN models) from which it squeezes a respectable 400 shots under CIPA conditions, around 60 more than the Panasonic Lumix GF6. Under a hinged door on the right side of the body are a micro HDMI port and a proprietary USB / AV port. But probably the most significant physical change is the addition of two new control wheels, a Sub dial at the front below the shutter release and a thumb-operated Main dial at the rear. It also avoids any confusion, it’s a big, nicely designed switch that sits in a small recess in the back left corner and a quick glance at it tells you everything you need to know. While I’ve been showing you the viewfinder and screen, Olympus owners will undoubtedly have spotted the new menu system, now sharing a similar horizontal structure to Canon. Unfortunately for owners of the previous battery I don’t think it’s compatible with the new camera. I should also add in both of the continuous Low drive modes, whether using the mechanical or electronic shutter, there’s some viewfinder blackout between frames, although it is possible to follow subjects fairly effectively while shooting. So in terms of photo and video quality and AF hardware, it’s essentially the same as the EM1 Mark II, but Olympus has improved the focusing algorithms as well as the built-in stabilisation, claiming up to 7 stops of compensation with unstabilised lenses or 7.5 with Sync IS models like the mm. While the full-frame sensors in the Canon, Nikon and Sony pro bodies may deliver lower noise at high ISOs, the smaller Four Thirds sensor in the E-M1X with its two-times field-reduction allows relatively small lenses to deliver long effective focal lengths, making for a more compact and lighter system.
