Olympus’ OM-1 shocked the photo world and spurred every camera maker to continual pursuit of higher technology in smaller form factors. When the OM-1 launched in 1972, it showed the photographic world that it was possible to have a professional-level camera in an incredibly small package. But what made the OM series special, compared to professional camera ranges from other makers, was their size. This camera offers the flagship firepower of the OM-1 Mark II, married with the creativity of the PEN-F and the iconic looks of Olympus' classic film SLRs. The OM System OM-3 is the camera that I've been waiting for since 2016. This portion of the review looks at quality of protein used, amount and other ingredients involved in the making of this protein powder. So, I have been shooting film now-and-then for more than a year. The PEN E-PL10 gets off to slightly mediocre start at ISO 100, but by ISO 200 it's already producing images that are as clean as those from the Fujifilm X-A7, and it's only a whisker behind the class-leading Canon EOS M50. Our signal to noise test measures image clarity, specifically the ratio of the actual image 'data' you want to capture, versus the image noise that you don't want, but will inevitably be visible when shooting at higher ISO sensitivities. With the PEN E-PL10 only having 16.1MP at its disposal, it simply cant resolve the same level of fine detail when compared to rival cameras packing ~24MP sensors. As mentioned, while small bodies from other manufacturers are mostly betrayed by the oversized lenses that need to accompany them, the E-PL10 pairs wonderfully with Micro Four Thirds' range of compact optics – in particular, Olympus' brilliant f/1.8 prime lenses. It does everything the other models do (and sometimes even more) for a fraction of the price. Don’t hesitate to get an OM-2N instead of another camera of the OM System. The Olympus OM-2N is an inexpensive entry ticket into the OM System. On the right side is an exposure compensation dial that also allows the setting of shutter speeds by lifting it up. Rotating the aperture ring to the left closes the aperture, while rotating the shutter speed dial to the right increases the exposure time. The 50mm f2 Macro is a very special lens, apparently one of the sharpest ever tested at the time and still great – this again would cost around £100. Like with many people, 90% of my shooting – whether with Film or Digital, is viewed and shared on a computer screen. The images themselves are only 5 Mega Pixels, which is about 2560×1920. I found the body alone felt fine in my hands, but if you fancy more to hold onto, an optional grip screws into the base, increasing the height and depth, while offering a repositioned shutter release and finger dial. It definitely feels lighter and inevitably less dense than the Mark II, indeed more like the EM10 Mark III, but it remains more weatherproofed than rivals and Olympus assures me it’s as robust as before. If it’s been a while since you’ve seen the EM5 Mark II, you’ll assume the Mark III version simply swaps the sensor and processor for those in the EM1 Mark II, but Olympus has actually taken the opportunity to redesign the body and control layout. It inherits the 20 Megapixel Four Thirds sensor from the EM1 II which finally brings confident phase-detect autofocus and 4k video to the EM5 series, while also boasting improved built-in stabilisation in a slightly lighter but still weather-sealed body. The Olympus OMD EM5 Mark III is a mid-range mirrorless camera aimed at photo and video shooters who value portability and handheld use without compromising features and quality. Olympus Pen EE-3 Review – A Weekend in Prague – by John Hanson Another benefit of electronic viewfinders is the wealth of overlays and shooting aids that can be displayed. LCDs certainly look better for portrait and skin tones use in my view, but I still personally prefer the punchier view of an OLED when shooting landscape and architecture. Of course this is just a playback technology and doesn’t impact on the actual image you’re recording, but compare an OLED viewfinder directly against an LCD and they do look quite different. At least the most important ability to reposition the AF area by touch is present and correct, whether composing on-screen or through the viewfinder. With a weight of 305 grams and dimensions of 13.3 x 6.8 x 5.6 cm, the camera is quite compact and easy to handle. The DX code on the film cartridge determines the correct sensitivity. The Olympus SuperZoom 3000 is a 35mm camera with a built-in light meter designed for an ISO range from 50 to 3200. Optical highlights include two aspherical elements, one dual surface aspherical element, one ED aspherical element, two further ED elements, and two High Refractive index elements. Handling ‘luxuries’ include a physical focus distance scale, which is revealed when pulling back the focus ring to engage manual focus. Crucially, though, the only difference is that the newer lens bears the OM branding (instead of Olympus) and is weather-sealed to the higher IP53 standard (above the IPX1 of this lens). That said, the Olympus M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro has been superseded by the OM System M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro II. Over time I came to understand that this lens can be effectively shot at quite slow handheld shutter speeds of 1 second or longer. As such I view it as a ‘special purpose’ lens that has an extremely narrow focus of use for me. My wife focused on the size/weight, and ease-of-use of the camera body. The PEN E-P5 RAW file measured 15.3Mb and, as usual, the crops are taken from the areas marked by the red rectangle. You can see how these models compare at higher sensitivities in my Olympus E-P5 Noise results. Well, they look strikingly similar with levels of detail and noise that are so closely matched you’d be hard pressed to tell them apart. I’ll update the X-M1 crops and comparisons when Camera RAW support is becomes available in Adobe Photoshop Camera RAW. I think if there’s going to be a sticking point for this camera, it’ll be the sensor. And for photography, of course, it means you can lower your shutter speed stupidly low and still get everything sharp, as well as wrangle longer lenses handheld too. It has exactly the same sensor, the same engine, it even has the same burst modes, auto focus points, and subject detection as the flagship. I've had this camera for a little while, but it's on loan, by the time you read this it will have already have gone back home… I’ve not been paid, and all thoughts are my own. Personally, altra lone peaks for only trail and olympus 5s when mixed (on pavement for part of the run). The fixed grip on the LX-7 provides the same sort of secure handling as the removable one on the XZ-2, and where the XZ-2’s flip-out screen protrudes further at the rear, the LX-7’s lens sticks out further at the front. So to sum up, the TG-tracker’s overall image quality is not great, but it does best with larger detail thats closer to the lens – say between 0.5 to 10 meters. The TG-Tracker does a little better in the final crop from the bottom edge – remember, with its fixed focuis lens even at f2 the TG-Tracker renders everything from 20cm to infinity in focus. The TG-Tracker was mounted on a tripod and set to its Wide mode which provides a 204 degree field of view equivalent to a 14mm lens on a 35mm camera. However Olympus also aimed for the snap shot market and developed the PEN E series which used automatic selenium cell metering. The sensitivity range runs from 100 to 12,800 ISO, up from a 6400 ISO maximum on the XZ-1 and the earlier model’s 800 ISO Auto ISO limit no longer applies. It can fire a ten-fram burst in a second with indefinite continuous shooting at around 2fps. The benchmark at the time was 35mm Film. I guess at the time it was because I thought more Mega Pixels and a newer CMOS sensor meant the older CCD models were poor. At the time Kodak used to mark their own Digital Compacts (a few of which I have and love) with “Kodak Color Science”. Such cameras were and still are beyond my budget but Kodak had jointly introduced the Micro Four Thirds format with Olympus and the Kodak CCD’s were to be found in a range of the older Olympus 4/3rds DSLR’s. In my haste, I half-pressed the shutter realease as I was raising the camera with the result that the focus is on the honey jars rather than the chap in the hat. I’ve been to this part of the South of France a couple of times and one of the highlights of my trip is usually a visit to the Saturday market in the beautiful town of Ceret in the foothills of the Pyrenees, famous for modern art and cherries. With both the screen and IS turned off most of the time I was confident that the E-P3 battery, which has a CIPA rating of 330 images would last all day, and it did. Having set the image quality to LF+RAW and the movie quality to AVCHD Full HF F – the best quality 1080i/60 mode at 20 Mbps, I then took a look at the custom menu. The 14-42mm kit lens now has an R suffix, a new knurled finish on the zoom and focus rings and a removable cover plate for the bayonet mount. “But it isn’t a NEW sensor!” I hear your shout… This is what you’d seemingly think is better for street photography, right? However, there is also a setting called Preset MF – which is sort of like zone focusing but said in a totally different way. But in this case when shooting around 6th Ave at night, the OM3 couldn’t quite do the job. Dual slots are now becoming standard features on high-end cameras and you’ll find them on the Fujifilm XT2 and Panasonic GH5, not to mention Canon and Nikon’s top bodies; this leaves Sony as the only major player to still only offer a single slot on even its top bodies. I believe Olympus were adopting standard and well-worn optical practices in their half frame cameras, and the main innovation was in overall body size. Given the films available back in 1959, I think its optimistic to think Olympus (or any other manufacturer of half-format cameras) took the viewing distance fully into account and applied a circle of confusion of 0.017mm as suggested in the wiki article, I think they set the circle of confusion at the more normal 0.029mm which was used to calculate depth of field in hi quality cameras (SLRs) in later years. Sticking with the subject of multiple exposures, the EM1 Mark II also lets you combine two images on a single frame. As you can see, the in-camera focus-stacking incurs a crop and in this case wasn’t sufficient to over the full distance, at least at f2.8, but the potential is clear. You can choose three or five frames at 2EV or 3EV increments, or seven frames at 2EV only, and again you can record JPEG, RAW or both for each frame. Single AF is available in any of the drive modes, but if you want Continuous AF, you’ll need to select the Sequential Low modes, at least when using the options pre-configured by default. It can be terribly confusing for even experienced Olympus owners, and potentially muddying it further is the ability to customize the actual fps speeds of the various Sequential Low and High modes. The specs proudly state the EM1 Mark II can shoot full resolution RAW files at 60fps in Single AF or 18 fps in Continuous AF, but both require the use of an electronic shutter with its related pros and cons. If you choose to record movies remotely with the camera, sadly, you can’t touch the screen to reposition the AF area or pull-focuss. In the other direction there’s a little bit of to and fro as the contrast-detect AF system tries to determine whether it’s focused in front of or behind it. Personally speaking I have a camera with 4k 60p and rarely use it above 30p, and in terms of image quality, autofocus and burst speed I’m perfectly happy with the performance of the Olympus sensor, but your mileage may of course vary. Every time a new camera comes out with an existing sensor, there’s always complaints, so the question you have to ask yourself is whether the photo and video quality will be good enough for you during the life of the product. As such you’re getting a camera that’s tougher than most, with great ergonomics, the best stabilisation in the business, autofocus and burst shooting that’s ideal for sports and wildlife, decent video and good photo quality straight out of camera. Personally speaking I’m happy with the photo quality, especially when coupled with the feature-set of the body, but there’s no getting away from the fact that most of its rivals at this price point are likely to employ new or at least more recent sensors. Olympus has partnered it with a brand new image processor, the TruePic IX, but in terms of image quality when shooting normally it’s essentially the same as the Mark II. It can be hard to specify exactly what you’d like to focus on and even when you’re tapping it, the camera doesn’t always respond the way you’d want it to; and once it does settle, there’s a little focus breathing back and forth. Interestingly the touch screen plays a much bigger role when using the novice-targetted Live Guide adjustments. Olympus calls this Super macro and there’s a dedicated position for it on the TG860’s mode dial One of the strengths of the TOUGH models is their ability to focus on very close subjects. This is really handy as when the screen is flipped forward it can be tricky to get to the ‘proper’ shutter release. That’s something you’d expect to see on all but the most expensive lenses and it’s not so bad you’d notice other than at 100 percent viewing sizes. The cameras were zoomed in to provide the same field of view, the ISO sensitivity was manually set to the lowest available setting and Program Auto mode was selected for the exposure. For this test the cameras were mounted on a tripod and image stabilisation was disabled. If you happen to use steroids it’s your body to do with what you please. Before we move on to look at the quality results, there’s one final feature of the Olympus TOUGH TG4 that you won’t find on the other rugged water-proof compacts I’ve tested and that’s the ability to shoot camera RAW files. The camera is always setup as the access point and, though you can connect to it with devices other than your phone, there’s no way to access images other than with the app. Impressively you can remotely change the exposure mode between iAUTO, Aperture priority, Super Macro, and Scene mode without touching the camera’s mode dial. The TG4 has four autofocus modes; Face iESP focuses on a face if there is one in the frame and if not defaults to 25-area AF. When you use Program shift the P indicator is appended with a small s to indicate the shifted exposure, which is a nice touch. This duplicates the function of the top position on the main dial, so I re-assigned it to IS mode, allowing me to turn the IS off and conserve battery power for general use, but quickly activate it for shots indoors and in low light. Turning the screen off would likely make a significant difference to the battery life and pressing the Fn1 button to turn it on if needed took a fraction of a second As it turned out, this really only makes a difference for continuous shooting, and then only marginally, so I later changed the assignment of the Fn1 button to toggle the LCD panel on and off.
