I didn’t have the chance or the time to try to get bored, but honestly, I am not sure if it’s even possible. I personally don’t mind the lagoon at all, but then I also live here in Playa del Carmen and work as a scuba diver, so I pretty much get to see the beach every day. This hotel is really all-inclusive with extra attention to service. Since we only stayed a short time at the hotel, we honestly didn’t spend much time in the room. They combine here for the kind of crackpot rock mayhem they whipped up on Malkmus’ 2020 Traditional Techniques, with Sweeney joining in for a fractured hippie-folk experiment. Combining the vocal talents of Paralandra’s front woman Casandra Carson, who has been making a respectable splash in the American rock scene for roughly a decade, and the iconic guitar chops of ex-Dokken and Lynch Mob virtuoso George Lynch; it’s a fold that follows the recent trend in Lynch’s career of frequent collaborative efforts, yet also one that stands out pretty easily from said pack. Another bluesy rocker and the sound is huge! Think like “Superstitious” by the band Europe and you have the feeling. This is all I love about AOR, great verse with great-sounding guitars, fantastic singing by Kent again and then the chorus to die for. I bet this will sound great in the live set. It is slow throughout, and feels to me like a natural bridge to the final act of the album. If not in that place, the song might land a glancing blow and not have much impact. There is also a cool switching of tempo on the guitar and drums, as they move rapidly to start and suddenly pull backwards and continue at a much slower tempo. Next, we get What Lies Within, which is much the same as the previous songs. If you are looking for one of the most thematic experiences of 2024, Rock Hard 1977 is probably the game you want to play! The nature of this game takes you through the life of a rock and roll (aspiring) icon. Rock Hard 1977 dies without the theme, and it’s not because the game isn’t great. It might be a great game, but it’s void of a concrete and necessary theme. But in so many of those situations, the theme could be changed at the drop of a hat, and the gameplay experience would remain the same. This is not a big gameplay problem, but does add to the unpolished feel. You have to roll a die with 1/6 chance of getting $2, 2/3 chance of getting $3 (the highest amount in the game), and 1/6 chance of losing $2! While I understand thematically why it works the way that it does, it’s so awful. A big gameplay issue that we ran into while playing was the imbalance of jobs. There is literally no box insert to organize the game components.
