A new world has opened out to Shakespeare, but it would be profitlessto spend much time on more or less probable conjectures concerning howand by whom it was revealed. What figures occupy the most prominent place in the poet's sumptuousharvest-home but the young, womanly forms of Marina, Imogen, Perdita,and Miranda. In this last splendid period of his life's glowing September, hisdramatic activity, bearing about it the clear transparent atmosphere ofearly autumn, is more richly varied now than it has ever been. Even the mineral-springwater at Yeumtong, and the detritus-charged glacial streams, gave nodifference, and I am hence satisfied that no objection can be urged againstriver waters of ordinary purity. I took the altitude of Yeumtso bycarefully boiling two thermometers, and the result was 16,279 feet, thebarometrical observations giving 16,808 feet. "Now with the drops of this most balmy timeMy love looks fresh "— Since, then, the following Sonnet (lvi.), whichmust date from about the same time, speaks of the friendship as newlyformed— The personalfeelings of the poet do not come much into play here, and though thesepoems may have been addressed to William Herbert in 1598, it is notimpossible, taking into account the many analogies in thought andmode of expression to be found in them and in Venus and Adonis andRomeo and Juliet, that they were produced several years before, andin this case, addressed to Southampton. The first group, with its reiterated appeal(seventeen times repeated) to the friend, to leave the world a livingcopy of his beauty, is unquestionably the least valuable. Once andoncePg 263 only,in his early days in Parliament, did he display some independence andrectitude; but when he saw that it gave offence in the highest places,he repented as bitterly as though he had been guilty of a sin againstall political morality, and besought her Majesty's forgiveness in termsthat might have befitted a detected thief. The Lyfe of Timon of Athens was printed for the first time in theold folio edition of 1623. All Shakespeare students of the present day concur in the opinion thatTimon of Athens, like Pericles, is but a great fragment from themaster-hand. The best part of theversification is distinctly Shakespearian, and contains all that wealthof thought which was characteristic of this period of his life; but theother parts are careless, discordant, and desperately monotonous. Now that all obstacles weresurmounted, and I was returning laden with materials for extending theknowledge of a science which had formed the pursuit of my life, will it bewondered at that I felt proud, not less for my own sake, than for that of themany friends, both in India and at home, who were interested in my success? As the moon sank, and we descended the narrowing valley,darkness came on, and with a boy to lead my sure-footed pony, I was at libertyuninterruptedly to reflect on the events of a day, on which I had attained theobject of so many years’ ambition.
