These powerful new learned associations underlie the “incentive-salience” (or “incentive motivation”) theory of addiction. Sensitized learning involves an enhanced mesolimbic dopamine system response that results in attribution of potentially pathological levels of incentive salience to cue-evoked seeking of drugs and natural rewards 135,136,137. However, there is growing evidence that it was an indication of addiction-related processes 31,52,54,73,86,107,111,112,113,114,115,116,117,118,119,120,121,122.
