What happens before and after payroll can be just as important as the payroll calculation itself.
In this month’s Payroll Community Meetup, payroll practitioners came together for an open-mic discussion around reconciliation, automation, AI, process improvement, and the growing role payroll leaders play across the business.
We were also joined by Pete Tiliakos, payroll industry analyst, advisor, podcast host, and Chief Payroll Champion, who shared his perspective on where payroll is headed and why payroll teams have an opportunity to take a much larger leadership role inside their organizations.
The conversation covers:
- Why payroll errors often originate upstream in time, benefits, HR, or other source systems
- Connecting Time → Benefits → Payroll → GL
- Why payroll reconciliation needs to extend beyond the payroll calculation
- Where automation can help — and where poor governance can introduce new risk
- The importance of trusted data and deterministic processes
- Why documenting payroll processes is increasingly important in an AI-enabled environment
- Building shared knowledge so teams do not repeatedly solve the same problems
- Using tools such as AI, transcription, Python, dashboards, and automation to reduce manual effort
- Why payroll leaders need to become stronger partners to HR, Finance, and the broader business
Pete also discusses the need for organizations to “get in shape” before handing processes over to automation — making sure processes, controls, data, and governance are understood before trying to automate them.
The group also explores practical ways to capture institutional payroll knowledge, including shared documentation, meeting transcription, AI-assisted documentation, and reusable reporting tools.
Pete closes the conversation by describing this as the “golden age of payroll” and encouraging payroll professionals to think of themselves as business leaders who happen to work in payroll — not simply payroll operators.
About the Payroll Community Meetup
This is an open, platform-agnostic monthly conversation for payroll professionals to share challenges, experiences, ideas, and practical solutions. No formal presentations and no product pitches — just payroll practitioners learning from one another.
